Kennett Square, Penn.--A group of high school lacrosse players on Monday had a funny bone to pick with their fellow classmates on the baseball team.
As they walked past a varsity baseball practice, one sophomore member of the Unionville High School varsity lacrosse team yelled out “Baseball blows,” to uproarious laughter.
The varsity infielders taking ground balls looked at each other and acknowledged the hilarity of the comment.
Soon other members of the lacrosse team were joining in.
“Wake me up before the next play,” yelled a senior backup goalie named Trent.
“Don’t forget to stand around for five minutes before the next pitch,” added a junior midfielder identified as Preston.
Baseball coach Dom D’Amico had to pause practice as members of his team doubled over in laughter.
It wasn’t clear what precipitated the comedy barrage. Onlookers wondered aloud whether some of the lacrosse players were working on bits for stand-up acts.
A track coach who stumbled on the impromptu performance suggested the players should apply to Harvard University so they could polish their skills at the famous Harvard Lampoon, a launching pad for comedians such as Conan O’Brien, B.J. Novak and Colin Jost.
“Those lacrosse kids are something else,” said D’Amico. “And to think, if they only could have made contact with a couple of pitches in Little League, we might have them on our team right now.”
The mood soured a bit when the lacrosse players returned to the scene 90 minutes later. One player yelled out the famous lacrosse saying “Chicks love our sticks!”
The baseball players who heard the quip looked down at the ground awkwardly as the witless phrase echoed for what seemed like an eternity. --SB!
