FISHKILL, N.Y.--It wasn’t enough that Tom Terwilliger awoke at the crack of dawn on Saturday to get his son to a baseball tournament and spent seven hours watching two games in the blazing sun. After it was over, he had to carry the boy’s equipment, too.
Terwilliger’s son Matt, 13, just couldn’t wait until he got to the car to dive back into his social media apps. He quickly grabbed his phone and started walking to the parking lot of Diamond Nation in Flemington, N.J., leaving his bag for his old man to grab.
The father realized he would get in big trouble if he left Matt’s bag next to the dugout.
“He would kill me,” said the 49 year old man.
Matt had a big day, going 4-6 in the two games, with a double. He also managed to down a hot dog and an order of chicken fingers between the first and second game and drain five $3 Gatorades on the day.
With an effort like that, his father realized the boy couldn’t be expected to carry his gear to the car.
“He was exhausted,” said Terwilliger, who got four hours of sleep the night before so he could get the boy to his 8:00 AM game 90 minutes early for warm-ups.
Not only was the player, known as “Matty Ice,” tired, but he also had to quickly resume bullying his schoolmates online before someone else stepped into his role as chief tormentor of the seventh grade.
The boy's cell-phone data usage was so high last year that his father had to upgrade to the unlimited plan, adding $40 to the monthly bill.
“I know it’s a lot,” said Terwilliger. “But he’s worth it.”--SB!
